There are many reasons why your skin feels sensitive and irritated in the winter months. Dry skin is a common skin problem and is often worse during the winter when environmental humidity is low. Dry skin results when there is not enough water in the stratum corneum for it to function properly. This can happen when protective oils in the stratum corneum are lost and the water that is normally present in the skin is allowed to escape (1). If enough moisture is depleted, skin may crack which exposes the living cells underneath to irritations in the environment.

Irritations may be environmental, but can also stem from your skin care routine.
